Building strong entrepreneurial ecosystems is key to supporting economic growth in both rural and urban communities. Michigan State University Extension’s Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities (CEC) Conference provides a platform for local leaders, educators, and stakeholders to collaborate, share resources, and strengthen entrepreneurial initiatives.

In May 2024, MSU Extension hosted the annual state-wide CEC Conference in Cadillac, Michigan, with support from local partners like the Cadillac Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Cadillac, the Cadillac Chamber of Commerce, and the Wexford County Alliance for Economic Success. The event welcomed 111 participants from 31 Michigan communities and two states. Over two days, attendees engaged in 24 breakout sessions, two keynote speeches, and a closing panel, all held throughout Cadillac’s historic downtown. Sessions, led by MSU Extension educators and partners like the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Automation Alley, covered tools for building entrepreneurial ecosystems and fostering sustainable development. Walking tours and community-embedded sessions further connected participants with the local environment.

Survey results from participants reflected strong success: 100% of respondents valued the conference, found sessions engaging, and gained useful knowledge. All agreed the content was applicable to their communities and that new connections would help them implement ideas locally. Attendees represented diverse sectors, including business (19%), economic development (30%), nonprofits (15%), and government (11%).

Through the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference, MSU Extension continues to equip communities with the tools and connections needed to drive economic growth, strengthen networks, and build resilient local economies across Michigan.
