500 Cities: Local Data for Better Health
The 500 Cities project is a collaboration between CDC, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the CDC Foundation. The purpose of the 500 Cities Project is to provide city- and census tract-level small area estimates for chronic disease risk factors, health outcomes, and clinical preventive service use for the largest 500 cities in the United States. These small area estimates will allow cities and local health departments to better understand the burden and geographic distribution of health-related variables in their jurisdictions, and assist them in planning public health interventions.

Community Resilience Estimates Equity Supplement (U.S. Census Bureau)
Community resilience is the capacity of individuals and households within a community to absorb the external stresses of a disaster. To measure this, the Census Bureau produced the Community Resilience Estimates (CRE). To provide context to the estimates and add to the discussion of equity, the CRE program has created the Community Resilience Estimates Equity Supplement or CRE for Equity.
The CRE for Equity dataset provides information about the nation, states, counties, and census tracts from four different data sources. These sources include the Community Resilience Estimates, the American Community Survey, the Decennial Census, and the Census Bureau’s Planning Database. Providing all this information in one dataset allows users quick access to the data on a variety of topics concerning social vulnerability and equity.

Distressed Communities Index
The Distressed Communities Index (DCI) is a tool for measuring the comparative economic well-being of U.S. communities and helps illuminate ground-level disparities across the country. The DCI is derived from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Business Patterns and American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates for 2016-2020, and sorts zip codes into quintiles of well-being: prosperous, comfortable, mid-tier, at risk, and distressed. In all, the DCI captures more than 99 percent of the U.S. population and 26,000-plus zip codes with at least 500 residents.
Economic Profile System
The Economic Profile System is a free, easy-to-use tool that provides access to 17 socioeconomic reports. Customized reports are available for U.S. communities, counties, and states and can be downloaded as Excel or PDF files.
Economic Profile System reports are based on credible public data sources such as the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Interior, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. Data are updated continuously.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) produces Economy at a Glance pages at the national, regional, state, and metropolitan area levels. The data displayed in these pages are assembled from different surveys and programs conducted by BLS. The Economy at a Glance pages are refreshed with current data every time any of the source programs releases new statistics. This typically occurs 7-9 times per month.
Food Environment Atlas (Economic Research Service)
The current version of the Food Environment Atlas has more than 280 variables, including new indicators on food banks and nutrition assistance program participation rates. All of the data included in the Atlas are aggregated into an Excel spreadsheet for easy download. These data come from a variety of sources and cover varying years and geographic levels. The documentation for each version of the data provides complete information on definitions and data sources.

Household Pulse Survey
The U.S. Census Bureau, in collaboration with multiple federal agencies, launched the Household Pulse Survey in 2020 to collect and disseminate near, real time data on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent issues. It has evolved to include content on other emergent social and economic issues facing households. Beginning in December 2022, the survey added a “natural disaster” module, asking respondents about their recent experiences with extreme events like hurricanes, floods, and fires.

Measuring Communities
Measuring Communities is a “social indicators” initiative aimed at shaping community efforts to support military and veteran families. The initiative is intended to focus and propel community action, help communities track their progress and sustain attention to military issues. The goals include developing a system of indicators that address military “friendliness” in communities and facilitate dialogue about indicators that should be attended to and measured. Measuring Communities provides users with access to data tables, charts and maps for more than 100 variables across 10 domains, including health, education, housing, legal, economy, demography and community. Most data are available for all 3,109 counties in the continental U.S.

After discovering that rural populations are shrinking due to young adult outmigration, fewer births and increased mortality, project members created a database that details county-level, age-specific net migration trends.

Survey of Household Economics and Decision-making
Since 2013, the Federal Reserve Board has conducted the Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED), which measures the economic well-being of U.S. households and identifies potential risks to their finances. Minnesota State Survey
The Minnesota State Survey is an omnibus survey, which means organizations formulate and pay for questions that are of special interest to them. The questions from all participating organizations are combined into one larger mail and online survey, enabling everyone to share in the costs of the survey administration and collection of demographic information. Once the project concludes, organizations receive a report of the data. The primary objective of the Minnesota State Survey is to obtain useful and technically sound information about the knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics of Minnesota residents.

The Missouri Census Data Center (MCDC) is a cooperative program among state agencies in Missouri and the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Nebraska Rural Poll
The Nebraska Rural Poll is an annual survey conducted by the UNL Department of Agricultural Economics in partnership with Rural Prosperity Nebraska and Nebraska Extension. Core questions are included every year; over time these core questions will provide insight about trends and changes occurring in rural Nebraska. In addition, each year rural citizens and government officials form an advisory committee that identifies key issues or topics to include in the survey.
