Using a science-driven, participatory approach, the program guides policy, systems, and environmental changes that enhance public spaces for community health while boosting economic development.

In Georgetown, IN (pop. 11,270), Extension’s Creating Healthy Communities team assisted in updating the parks and recreation master plan and comprehensive plan — both necessary for state grant applications. Through three facilitated public meetings, community assets were identified, existing strategies from previous plans were reviewed, and responsible parties, funding sources, and timelines were established. Additionally, 156 residents completed a community-wide survey to inform planning.

As a direct result of this planning process, Georgetown has achieved significant progress on twelve community objectives: establishing a Tax Increment Finance district, mentoring property owners on façade programs, allocating $95,000 for façade grants, awarding food truck permits, partnering with local organizations on designated food zones, updating town branding, funding $500,000 in pedestrian connectivity projects, applying for additional federal funding, improving park accessibility with Christopher Reeves Foundation grant funding, acquiring land for park expansion, and applying for Lilly Foundation funds for an amphitheater.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates how Extension’s facilitation helps communities translate planning into concrete actions that improve public spaces, enhance community well-being, and leverage significant funding for infrastructure development — creating lasting impact for residents and positioning communities for sustainable growth.
