December Webinar
The Changing Relationship Between Farm and Non-Farm Economies
Tuesday, December 10, 2024 | 2:00 – 3:00 pm (Eastern Time)
Historically the economic wellbeing of rural communities has depended upon a healthy farm economy. Over the last several decades that relationship has undergone fundamental changes. This webinar will present research that shows how increasingly a healthy farm economy is dependent on a vibrant non-farm rural economy.
Presenter:
- Steven C. Deller, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor, Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Wisconsin–Madison
Steven Deller is a Community Development Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research and Extension programs focus on better understanding the changing structure of rural economies with an eye toward policies that rural communities can pursue to improve their economic conditions.

January Webinar
Including the History of Redlining in Extension to Contextualize Local Housing Policy Decisions
Friday, January 24, 2025 | 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Eastern Time)
The MSU Extension Housing Policy Team developed a suite of award-winning housing programs to help with housing affordability and attainability in Michigan. Among other causes of housing inequality, those programs include the history of redline mapping, in which the U.S. federal government institutionalized discriminatory practices that created wealth in housing for some and not others, and which still drives inequality in housing today. MSU Extension developed a website on the history of redline mapping in Michigan, which has been cited by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and is used in Extension programs. This webinar will review this history, these Extension programs, and how you can develop a similar resource of this history for your own state.
Presenter:
- Craig Carpenter, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, Michigan State University
Dr. Carpenter’s Extension efforts revolve around community and economic development. He develops curricula for community and regional economic workshops across Michigan to help communities identify and implement economic development opportunities. His research efforts focus on the use of federal administrative data to examine questions related to the interaction of race, ethnicity, veteran status, entrepreneurship, economic growth, and public policy.
